Alex Murdaugh's retrial is heading toward an April 5, 2027 court date, and his defense team just filed the motions that could reshape the entire case. At the center of it sits the blood-spatter analyst whose testimony helped convict him the first time. Court filings reviewed for this episode show that analyst, Tom Bevel, wrote an initial report concluding the stains on Murdaugh's white T-shirt were transfer marks, not gunshot spatter. That conclusion changed later, and defense attorneys say it changed after Bevel ran the shirt's colors through Photoshop. The state never put him on the stand. Alongside that, Murdaugh's lawyers are pushing to send an unknown male's DNA, recovered from under Maggie Murdaugh's fingernails the night she and Paul were killed, to Othram, the same forensic genealogy lab tied to the Bryan Kohberger case. Attorney Jim Griffin told the court the technology to run that sample simply wasn't available when SLED first collected it. First-responder accounts have also come under fire, with the defense telling the judge those statements don't line up and that unreturned tips were forwarded to SLED. Meanwhile, Attorney General Alan Wilson has kept the death penalty on the table, and the judge now overseeing the case has made clear she isn't in the business of granting delays. This episode breaks down every motion filed, the wrongful-conviction case the defense is citing as precedent, and what both sides need that fingernail evidence to mean. Two people are still dead at those kennels, and one of them had unidentified DNA under her nails that sat untested for years. The defense is also leaning on a wrongful-conviction case out of Indiana, David Camm, as proof that fingernail DNA and shifting forensic testimony have upended verdicts before.
