Zwerner spent nearly 2 weeks in the hospital and underwent 6 surgeries. In November 2025, a jury awarded Zwerner $10 million in a civil lawsuit against Parker, alleging the former administrator dismissed concerns that the student may have brought the weapon to school. Parker has filed an appeal. Now the former assistant principal, Dr. Ebony Parker, is on trial facing 8 felony counts of child endangerment (one for each bullet) with a maximum penalty of up to 5 years on each count. Prosecutors allege that Parker failed to act when warned the student may have a weapon and was in a "violent mood" that day. The student's mother, Deja Taylor, was sentenced to nearly four years in prison for felony child neglect and federal weapons charges. Her son told authorities he climbed to the top of a dresser to retrieve the gun from his mother's purse.
