Before he was a headliner opening for SZA, D4VD was a homeschooled kid in Houston recording music in his sister's closet. The only music allowed in the house was gospel until he was thirteen. His mother was his teacher, his social world, the person who reportedly suggested he start making music. Then the internet opened everything up. By seventeen he was signed to Darkroom and Interscope Records. Touring globally. Making real money. Still a teenager. Nobody in the system around him was apparently there to raise him — their job was to keep the product moving. Prosecutors allege David Anthony Burke is responsible for the death of fourteen-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez and that he killed her to protect his career. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. This episode isn't about the criminal case. It's about the question underneath it — what allegedly made him? Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott has spent more than thirty years in forensic mental health. She traces Burke's trajectory through every system that allegedly failed. A restrictive household that gave way to unrestricted digital access with no intermediary. A mother who was reportedly everything and allegedly saw nothing. An industry machine that handed a teenager sudden wealth and a world tour without checking whether anyone was watching. Scott examines what each of those conditions allegedly does to a developing mind — isolation followed by unlimited access, no peer socialization during formative years, financial power without emotional infrastructure, and an entourage built around revenue instead of accountability. She identifies what was missing from the equation long before the outcome prosecutors now describe, and explains why the gap between a sheltered childhood and an unmonitored industry creates conditions forensic psychologists have studied for decades. Burke has pleaded not guilty and maintains his innocence.
