Such steps once counted as acts of war but are now being normalized. Despite three and a half years of stalemate and signs the war is unwinnable, Western leaders continue repeating the same escalation strategy. At a European meeting, Zelensky framed Ukraine as Europe’s bulwark and pushed for new defenses such as a “drone wall” to protect the continent. European leaders echoed his calls for more weapons, fortifications, and sanctions. Zelensky’s position makes sense for him—he needs wider involvement to keep Ukraine in the fight—but European leaders appear to adopt his talking points without weighing their own national interests. Viktor Orbán of Hungary publicly opposes this groupthink, emphasizing Hungary’s national interest, economic realities, and the need for peace instead of endless escalation. He points out Hungary relies on Russian oil due to geography and cannot simply cut ties. Slovakia’s Robert Fico and others share Orbán’s skepticism. Many EU and NATO members may privately agree with him, but hardline states (Scandinavia, Baltic countries, parts of Germany and France, UK political class) dominate policy. Orbán argues Ukraine is financially dependent on the West, thus not fully sovereign, and stresses realism: Europe’s economic situation is worsening, yet leaders push ideological escalation instead of pragmatic solutions. The divide in Europe is between realist leaders like Orbán, who prioritize peace and economic survival, and hardliners who believe willpower and escalation can change geopolitical realities.
