Vineet joined HCL in 1985, founded Comnet in 1993 and grew it into a $1.4 billion technology management services business, and served as CEO of HCL Technologies from 2007 to January 2013. During that time he led one of the most studied transformations in the Indian IT industry, taking HCLT from $0.7 billion in revenue in 2005 to $4.7 billion by 2013, with over 85,000 employees across 32 countries. His management practices have been taught as case studies at Harvard Business School and London Business School. The conversation opens with leadership at scale. Vineet explains why people do not want to be managed but inspired, and how raising an organisation's "clock speed" can change results with the same product, service, and customers. He shares the story of how his sales team in Mumbai went from under 1% to 50% market share, why HCL chose not to lay off a single employee during the 2008 recession, and why he made his own employee-led appraisal public as CEO. Sharan and Vineet then turn to careers and the future of work in the age of AI. They discuss how a fresh graduate in 2026 should think about choosing an industry, why your vertical matters more than your starting salary, and the debate around low entry-level IT salaries versus rising CEO compensation. Vineet also explains why the Indian IT sector has struggled to keep pace with the AI shift, why he believes AI is still in its "ugly duckling" stage without clear revenue-generating use cases, and why India's economic growth depends on companies and investors taking more risk. The episode closes with a message to Indian parents on why the country risks becoming a nation of copiers rather than seekers, and how curiosity and experimentation must be built at the dining table. It is a valuable listen for students, working professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors following India's IT sector, startups, and the economy.
