She is well known for her groundbreaking research into the theory of massive gravity — a radical theory that contends the graviton has a nonzero mass potentially explaining the expansion of the universe without the need for dark energy. She has been interviewed by Morgan Freeman won the 2020 UK Blavatnik Award for Young Scientists and is the author of The Beauty of Falling: A Life in Pursuit of Gravity. In this conversation with Julian Dorey she discusses massive gravity DARPA's anti-gravity research dark energy and the God question that she argues physics cannot avoid. The massive gravity thread is the episode's most scientifically significant and most intellectually provocative contribution. The mainstream view among physicists is that dark energy — a phenomenon we cannot directly observe — makes up approximately 68% of the universe and is responsible for its accelerating expansion. De Rham's research challenges that consensus directly. Her theory of massive gravity posits that the graviton — the hypothetical particle responsible for transmitting gravitational force — has a nonzero mass. This seemingly small modification to the standard model of gravity has profound implications. If the graviton has mass then gravity behaves differently at cosmological scales in ways that could explain the accelerating expansion of the universe without invoking dark energy at all. What most physicists have attributed to an invisible and undetectable form of energy may instead be a consequence of how gravity actually works — and de Rham's theory is the most mathematically rigorous and most observationally consistent alternative to the dark energy consensus that has been developed. The DARPA anti-gravity thread is the episode's most immediately significant contribution for Julian Dorey's audience. DARPA has documented programs examining advanced propulsion and gravity-related physics. De Rham addresses what the documented DARPA research actually involves what it does and does not tell us about the possibility of anti-gravity technology and what a genuine theoretical physicist who works on the fundamental nature of gravity actually thinks when she examines the claims and research that circulate in the anti-gravity and UAP space. The God question thread closes the episode with the most philosophically significant dimension of the conversation. De Rham argues that physics cannot avoid the God question — not because physics proves or disproves God's existence but because the deepest questions about the fundamental nature of gravity space time and the cosmological constant inevitably raise questions about why the universe has the specific laws it has and what if anything those laws point toward. **Inside This Clip:** - What massive gravity is and why de Rham's theory could eliminate the need for dark energy entirely - Why the graviton having a nonzero mass changes everything about how we understand the universe's expansion - The mainstream dark energy consensus and why de Rham believes the status quo in physics is wrong - DARPA's anti-gravity research — what it actually involves and what a top gravity physicist thinks about it - What the documented DARPA programs tell us about the real state of advanced gravity research - Dark energy — what it is why we cannot observe it and why de Rham's theory may make it unnecessary - Beyond Einstein gravity — what the frontier of theoretical physics actually looks like right now - The God question — why de Rham says physics cannot avoid it and what her answer actually is - What the cosmological constant problem tells us about the deepest mysteries in physics - Why Julian Dorey says this is the most mind-expanding conversation in the series This is the frontier of gravity physics examined by the woman who is most actively rewriting it — and the conversation that makes the deepest questions in science accessible to everyone who has ever looked up at the sky and wondered what is actually out there. --- ***TIMESTAMPS*** @JulianDoreyDaily
