Lindsay Clancy sent her husband out for Thai food and had roughly twenty minutes alone with her three children. What the Duxbury jury has spent this trial trying to decide is whether the woman who used that window was in control of herself — or whether a voice was. Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague told jurors Clancy chose the basement, chose the exercise bands, and did it three separate times: once for Cora, once for Dawson, once for Callan. Then, Sprague argued, Clancy missed a phone call. She called back. She had a conversation. She hung up. A woman controlled by a hallucination, the state says, doesn't manage a callback. The defense tells a different story. Clancy told forensic evaluators a male voice appeared for the first time that January afternoon — a voice she had never heard before, telling her this was her last chance to kill her children and then herself. It lasted about eighteen minutes. The moment the children were dead, it stopped. She says she hasn't heard it since. Defense psychiatrist Phillip Resnick, who evaluated Andrea Yates two decades ago, called Clancy a puppet controlled by an external force. Paul Zeizel diagnosed bipolar disorder with postpartum psychosis eleven days after the killings. The prosecution's own forensic psychiatrist, Gregory Saathoff, testified that hallucinations vanishing the instant an act is finished isn't how command hallucinations typically behave. Defense attorney Reddington's closing argument didn't ask the jury to forgive what happened. It pointed to thirteen psychiatric medications, prescribed by providers who never once talked to each other, and asked who actually failed Lindsay Clancy first.
