Two cases, four segments, and one thing in common: in both, somebody saw it coming and told the people whose job it was to act. Christa Pike's attorneys sued Tennessee in January, telling a court that a blood condition and small veins made it likely the IV would fail. The state argued her veins were reliably accessible. A special master heard days of testimony. Governor Bill Lee refused to step in after her clemency petition was filed in September. On September 30 Pike took two doses of pentobarbital, survived with significant injuries to both arms, and on October 7 a judge ordered Tennessee to preserve every needle, drug lot number and log from that room. On January 20, 2021, a friend of Sandra Birchmore's called the Stoughton Police Department and reported what Matthew Farwell had been doing. Prosecutors say a department employee told Farwell about the call, and that he answered with a string of angry messages. Sandra was dead twelve days later, 23 years old and pregnant. Farwell has pleaded not guilty, maintains she died by her own hand, and jury selection in his federal trial began October 6 in Boston.
