A discarded pizza crust on a Manhattan sidewalk gave investigators the DNA match that cracked the Gilgo Beach case wide open. Months of surveillance. One abandoned sample in a public trash can. A male hair on burlap wrapping around Megan Waterman's remains. That single connection unlocked the warrants, the devices, and ultimately the prosecution's entire case against Rex Heuermann — a 62-year-old architect who stood in a Suffolk County courtroom and admitted to killing eight women over seventeen years. Megan Waterman was 22 years old from Scarborough, Maine. She called her three-year-old daughter every single day. When those calls stopped in June 2010, her family reported her missing within two days — because Megan never missed that call. Surveillance footage captured her leaving a Holiday Inn Express at 1:15 a.m. to meet a client. She was found six months later, wrapped in burlap along Ocean Parkway, alongside the rest of the Gilgo Four. Heuermann pleaded guilty to seven counts of murder — Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Lynn Costello, Sandra Costilla, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, and Megan Waterman. He also admitted to intentionally causing the death of Karen Vergata, an eighth victim folded into the plea agreement. According to prosecutors, Heuermann kept digital records of his methodology — checklists, notes on evidence destruction — all stored on a computer inside the home he shared with his wife and children.
