Caleb Flynn was sentenced to life without parole after a jury found him guilty on nine counts. His lawyer Patrick Mulligan filed a notice of appeal and sought appointed counsel. The defense has challenged the proof of prior calculation and design, while raising questions about jury instructions and the decision to keep the trial in Miami County. But the appeal is only half the story. Robin Dreeke joins Tony Brueski to examine what the trial showed about Alleigha Botner, whose messages with Flynn numbered roughly 107,000. Botner testified that she wrote, “I want to kill her, Caleb.” She also described deleting messages after Ashley Flynn died and initially denying the affair to federal investigators. The defense questioned investigators about why Botner’s locations and other possible leads received limited scrutiny. Cameras captured movements of a vehicle at the Vandalia property where she was house-sitting, but footage of a vehicle alone cannot identify its driver. That distinction matters when a conviction is being challenged over what the jury was asked to decide. An appeal is not a second trial, and questions about an investigation do not establish Botner’s involvement. She has not been charged in Ashley’s death. Flynn continues to deny killing his wife. What could the appellate court actually review, and what would another courtroom fight mean for Ashley’s family?
