In today’s podcast Dr. Anvita Madan-Bahel and I talk about how desire can be fluid and situational and that people who identify as straight can, and do, seek same sex pleasure without it redefining their entire identity. We created labels and definitions to give ourselves a vocabulary, to step outside the boxes society had built for us and reclaim individuality. But somewhere along the way, those very definitions and labels turned into the next set of boxes with all the associated guilt. Identities like straight, gay, bi were supposed to give us language for feelings and experiences so we could talk about them, not so we could be trapped by them. Desire exists on a spectrum. The body will often respond to physical touch if the correct nerve endings are stimulated in a safe, consensual, pleasurable setting, it is not restricted to “who” is touching you. The meaning we attach to that touch or to our arousal comes from culture conditioning, we are expected to line up our identity, fantasy and behaviour and when someone steps outside that script, they feel that some how they’ve gone against themselves. Sexual identity and sexual behaviour are not always the same thing. Identity is how we see ourselves romantically and emotionally. Behaviour can sometimes come from curiosity, opportunity or even situational context without changing that core identity. Human sexuality has always included this fluidity.
