Prosecutors wrote in a court brief that they believe two of Celeste Rivas Hernandez's fingers were removed because of what was inked on them. That single line, buried in paperwork, is one of the most disturbing details to surface in the entire d4vd preliminary hearing, and it's where this breakdown starts. At 12:04 in the morning, from a stretch of road off Highway 154 in Santa Barbara County, a call went out from David Burke's phone to Celeste's number, hours after prosecutors say she was already dead. Nobody picked up. An LAPD criminalist testified about Bluestar reactions across rubber mats, the bricks underneath them, a rowing machine, a tarp, a charging cord, and a trash bag of wipes, all presumptive positive for blood. Defense attorney Blair Berk got the same criminalist to admit she can't call any of it definitively blood, and pointed out two chainsaws never swabbed for touch DNA. Then came the final session prosecutors built their case around. The medical examiner testified Celeste died from two sharp-force wounds and had been dead for weeks before she was found. A detective walked the court through her phone, messages tracing back to when she was eleven, nearly fifty images investigators labeled illegal material involving a minor, and texts from January 2024 indicating she was thirteen and pregnant. Her mother cried in the gallery. Her father looked at the floor. Burke has pleaded not guilty to every count. A judge now decides whether this goes to a jury.
