Lindsay Clancy checked herself into a psychiatric hospital on New Year's Eve. Nineteen days later, all three of her children were dead. She'd told her husband at the end of December that she was having thoughts of hurting Cora, Dawson, and Callan. She went to the hospital. She was discharged. Whatever happened in those nineteen days between that discharge and the deaths of her three children in their Duxbury, Massachusetts home is the gap this entire trial keeps circling back to. Her attorney puts her medication count at roughly thirteen different psychiatric drugs across about four months. Her own malpractice lawsuit describes a dose increase the day before the killings, and a night without sleep. She's pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. Jury selection began July 20 in Plymouth Superior Court, and it opened with prosecutors moving to challenge her defense experts before a single juror was seated. That was the third time in eleven days the Commonwealth moved to limit who gets to speak for her defense. On July 9, prosecutors dropped all three strangulation charges, calling them redundant. On July 13, the judge blocked women who've survived postpartum psychosis from testifying about what it actually feels like from the inside. What's left for the jury is a paper trail: a hospital discharge, a climbing medication count, a missed warning sign, and nineteen days that ended in three children's deaths. Two jurors were seated by lunch on day one. The trial is expected to run four to eight weeks. Patrick Clancy, her husband, is on the defense witness list. He's also suing her healthcare providers and has publicly asked people to forgive her. Nineteen days is a long time for a system that had every warning to do nothing with any of it.
