Matthew Farwell’s phone records contained two Google searches on February 9, 2021, eight days after Sandra Birchmore died. One asked whether consent can be revoked in Massachusetts. The other asked whether deleted messages can be recovered with Cellebrite, software used to retrieve information from phones. FBI examiner Christopher Beckstrom presented those searches to jurors in Farwell’s federal trial. The timing matters because prosecutors accuse the former Stoughton police officer of killing Sandra and staging her death to resemble a self-inflicted act. Farwell has pleaded not guilty. His defense says Sandra died by suicide after he visited her apartment to end their relationship. A search record shows what was entered on a device; jurors still have to decide what, if anything, it proves about the charge. Then there’s the department surrounding this case. A civil lawsuit names Farwell’s twin brother, former officer William Farwell, and former deputy chief Robert Devine in allegations involving Sandra. Their roles in that litigation are separate from Matthew’s federal criminal prosecution. Civil allegations do not establish a criminal conspiracy, and neither man has been charged in Sandra’s death. Prosecutors have also challenged the adequacy of the original investigation. The FBI inquiry began in 2023, well after Sandra’s 2021 death. Investigators examined device evidence, messages, and the work of officers who first handled the case.
