The prosecution rested its case against Lindsay Clancy after fourteen days at Plymouth Superior Court, and some of what happened on the way there has legal analysts questioning the DA's own strategy. On cross-examination, Lindsay's former mother-in-law testified she was a wonderful, nurturing mother, and the prosecutor asked if she knew murder was a mortal sin. The judge struck the question. Lindsay's own mother testified that her daughter told the family the medication was destroying her mind, and the prosecutor asked why she never had Lindsay committed. During autopsy testimony for eight-month-old Callan, Lindsay sobbed so hard the judge called a recess. The next morning, defense attorney Kevin Reddington accused someone on the prosecution's side of saying "shut her up" on a hot mic. The DA's office says the words were "shut it off." The prosecution opened this trial calling Lindsay "controlling, meticulous, and manipulative" and claiming she faked a suicide attempt. She's paralyzed from the waist down. She cut her own wrists and neck before jumping from a second-story window, and the jury sees her in a wheelchair every day of trial. But a not guilty verdict isn't the finish line some people think it is. Massachusetts law follows an insanity acquittal with a forty-day observation window, then commitment petitions the state can refile every six months indefinitely. Getting out means convincing a judge she's no longer mentally ill or dangerous, while carrying a diagnosis her own lawyers told the jury she'll manage for life. Andrea Yates, acquitted the same way in 2006, is still in a Texas facility today.
