Barry Morphew allegedly signed the paperwork that would have destroyed the most critical physical evidence left in his wife's murder case, and investigators stopped it with less than a day to spare. Suzanne Morphew's remains were found in a shallow grave near Moffat, Colorado, and an autopsy turned up a wildlife tranquilizer called BAM in her bone marrow, a chemical prosecutors say only one private citizen in that area had legal access to. Two weeks after Barry was re-indicted, extradited from Arizona, and pleaded not guilty for a second time, he allegedly authorized releasing his wife's remains to a funeral home and approved their cremation. Prosecutors intervened the day before it was scheduled to happen. That wasn't the only thing Barry did while awaiting trial. After the original prosecution collapsed and the lead prosecutor was disbarred, he relocated more than six hundred miles to a trailer park in Cave Creek, Arizona, and lived there under at least two aliases. A bar manager knew him as Bruce. A gas station clerk knew him as Lee. Neither learned his real name until the day he was arrested, and when a woman at the bar said his actual name to his face, he denied it. This episode lays out the cremation motion in full, how close it came to happening, and why prosecutors say the timing wasn't a coincidence. Jury selection is set to begin October 13 in Alamosa, and the question at the center of all of it is simple: is this how an innocent man behaves while the state builds its case against him? He's already pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, and all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty, but the timeline of his own actions is what prosecutors plan to put in front of a jury first.
