The Trump administration’s leaked 28-point peace plan sparked backlash from EU officials, highlighting a divide between public rhetoric and practical outcomes. According to Professor Glenn Diesen, Europe has abandoned the post–Cold War goal of cooperative security and instead aims to maintain Russian weakness while supporting Ukraine, even as the war’s outcome increasingly favors Russia. Behind the scenes, European leaders likely recognize the disastrous reality on the battlefield but continue their policies because the fighting is carried out by Ukrainian forces, not Europeans themselves. The strategy is seen as unsustainable: continued support for Ukraine may temporarily harm Russia, but it risks eventual Ukrainian collapse, fracturing NATO and EU unity. Diesen predicts the war will end either via negotiation or Russian victory, with European and U.S. policymakers facing a severe reckoning when the conflict’s unsustainable nature becomes unavoidable.
