Thirteen months after Bryan Kohberger stood in an Idaho courtroom and said the word guilty four times, a judge's own question to him that day is now the thing threatening to sink his bid to take it all back. Kohberger filed a handwritten petition for post-conviction relief in Ada County District Court, representing himself, telling the New York Times his actual innocence is his truth. Before he filed it, he got to a prison phone and called a reporter, not a court, not an attorney. What he said in that call, and what he's asking the State of Idaho to do next, has landed on the families of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin as something they were promised in writing could never happen. The petition claims ineffective assistance of counsel, that his defense team withheld evidence and gave him a distorted picture of what death row and a life sentence would actually look like. He blames threats, false promises, and bad information for the confession itself. But when that judge asked him directly, under oath, whether he was pleading guilty because he was guilty, Kohberger answered yes. That single exchange is the sentence his own petition now has to explain away. He's also told the court he'd welcome the death penalty being sought again at a new trial. The Goncalves family responded within hours, taking the petition apart line by line, and they had something to say about who handed him a microphone in the first place. There was never a trial.
