Did you know the health choices you and your partner make before you conceive can program your future child’s genes for life? The preconception window is a foundational time for both parents to optimize their health and give their baby the best possible start, yet it is almost entirely ignored in conventional medicine. In this episode of the Dr. Hyman Show, I dive deep into the science of epigenetics and reveal why the alarming rise in childhood conditions like autism, ADHD, and obesity is largely preventable. The health of both the sperm and the egg are critical, and I provide a clear, functional medicine roadmap for any couple planning to start a family. In this special Health Bites episode, you will discover the 5 things you must do before getting pregnant: Optimize Your Diet: Learn how our modern, ultra-processed diet drives the insulin resistance and inflammation that are at the root of infertility issues like PCOS and poor sperm quality. I explain what to eat to create a nutrient-dense environment for a new life. Take The Right Supplements: It's critical to start a high-quality prenatal vitamin 3-6 months before conception for both men and women. Taking the right form of folate before pregnancy has been shown to reduce a child's autism risk by 40%. Reduce Your Toxin Exposure: Environmental toxins like BPA, phthalates, and heavy metals are potent endocrine disruptors that can have transgenerational impacts on your child's health, affecting their hormones and cognitive function. Manage Your Stress: High stress levels can directly disrupt reproductive hormones. Studies show women who are highly stressed during their ovulatory window are 45% less likely to conceive. Prioritize Quality Sleep: Poor sleep disrupts your circadian rhythms and key reproductive hormones like luteinizing hormone, which is critical for triggering ovulation.
