It’s May 2019, and the medical staff at Treliske Hospital in Cornwall have just received a notice: their colleague, vascular surgeon Neil Hopper, is being rushed to their facility. Following a week in which he suffered from cold sweats and a fever, Neil’s feet became septic, and his team thought he would have to lose them. And while his colleagues felt awful for him and expected him to be depressed about the loss, Neil seemed to be in good spirits. He was upbeat, hopeful, and didn’t even seem to miss his legs. This shocked everyone, and they thought that he was just making the best of a bad situation. In reality, losing his legs is exactly what Neil Hopper wanted all along.
