A photograph of a blindfolded three-year-old with bruises on his face — deleted an hour after it was taken. A Facebook message coaching a cover story sixty seconds after a 911 call — deleted. A Netflix movie streaming on a phone left at home while its owner drove a borrowed car through Two Rivers, Wisconsin and dropped a suitcase at a thrift store donation door. That suitcase tested positive for Elijah Vue’s DNA. Jesse Vang and Katrina Baur allegedly tried to erase every trace of what happened to three-year-old Elijah Vue. The investigation recovered almost all of it. This is the full breakdown of the case — from the relationship between Baur and Vang, which stretches back to a 2015 trafficking allegation, through the text messages documenting what the criminal complaint calls coordinated cruelty against a toddler, to the seven-month community search that ended when a hunter found Elijah’s remains three miles from the apartment. Forensic examination showed healed fractures on the child’s skull and face. The manner of death was ruled homicide. Vang faces life in prison. Baur faces sixty years. A judge in Manitowoc County has denied every defense motion to move the trial. Both have pleaded not guilty.
