Stevia. It’s been around for decades. It’s very well-studied. It has no carbs or calories and doesn’t affect your blood sugar. Stevia is a great, safe sweetener choice and a good alternative to sugar. The one downside to stevia is that some people think it has a bitter aftertaste. This is because of your genes—you may be hypersensitive to stevioside, the active ingredient in stevia, causing it to taste bitter instead of sweet. If that’s the case, avoid stevia and use another one of these sweeteners instead. 2. Monk fruit extract. Also called luo han guo, monk fruit extract is a zero-calorie, zero-carb sweetener that provides sweetness without affecting your metabolism or blood sugar. If you think stevia tastes bitter or leaves a weird aftertaste, monk fruit may be a better option. In terms of taste it’s probably the closest thing on this list to genuine sugar. You can find it in liquid, granule, or powder forms. You can even get “brown sugar” or “raw sugar” monk fruit. 3. Erythritol. Erythritol is a sugar alcohol, which means it’s very similar to white sugar in terms of chemical structure. As a result, its taste and texture are also similar, though it’s not quite as sweet—erythritol has only about 60-80% the sweetness of real sugar. But unlike table sugar, erythritol contains bonds that the enzymes in your digestive system can’t break down. So instead of digesting erythritol, it simply passes through your system without affecting your blood glucose, insulin, metabolism, or anything else. It’s a good choice as a sweetener, though you may notice a slight cooling sensation after eating it. This is normal—erythritol actually absorbs heat as it dissolves, so it causes a cold feeling when it touches your tongue. **** Let's be friends!
