Sending standard type American battleships to the Guadalcanal theater in August 1942 would have resulted in an unacceptable loss of those ships due to Japanese torpedo attacks.

“if they go out to Guadal Canal, I 100% agree it's going to be a torpedo shooting gallery because to your point, they're exactly the target that those long lances were built to kill.”

The Japanese strategy in 1942 relied on the hope that quick, shocking defeats would compel the United States to negotiate for a settlement.

“I think there was an understanding from the outset by the Japanese that there could never be a military end to this war per se because they never had the ability to, you know, invade the West Coast and occupy us or do any of that stuff. So, it's got to be a negotiated settlement.”

The war against Japan was not solely a naval and Marine Corps effort but relied heavily on a massive, multifaceted army force.

“it was idea that it was the Navy's war and that all the land fighting was done by a few good Marines and that was it. And uh and actually that couldn't be farther from the truth. I mean, uh, it's just it's just a massive army that fights and and, uh, and does the logistical side and the engineering ”
