She believes that stepparenting is not about the stepparent, but rather about prioritizing the happiness and well-being of the child.

“One of the things he said to me from the very beginning was you always respect the parents as the parents. And you also need to wrap your head around the fact that your role as a stepparent is not about you. It's never going to be about you. It's always about the child.”

Kippy acknowledges that his behavior toward his stepdaughter has been wrong and disrespectful.

“I agree that my attitude is wrong and and disrespectful.”

He compares the role of a stepparent to motion capture acting, noting that it is an essential, thankless investment that children will appreciate in adulthood.

“So if a parent is in there doing the hard work in the paint of like creating structure for a child and holding children accountable and it's not a biological child it can feel like thankless but it's a really really important job and at the end of the day when kids grow up and become adults I think ”
