“What if we made DIY wildlife refuges by applying your ideas to this larger scale?”

Successful conservation work on private land in the United States depends on the voluntary decision of individual landowners to invest in it.

“If we see good conservation work done on private land in the United States, the reason that got done is because the private land owner decided to do it. Um it's almost never because a regulation forced them to.”

Doug Duren advocates for the active restoration of native habitats like savannas and grasslands to improve biodiversity and support species such as grassland birds.

“I like grassland birds. I like grassland species. I like diversity and um and so we're you know restoring native habitats and that's and it's been really fun to have people there helping us with it who are learning about it and making that kind of contribution to conservation.”

“one of the big things, the one of the biggest things is to be mindful of the fact that in a lot of places when we're working to protect space or protect habitat for mu deer, we're also protecting memory and access to those places over time.”

“I lived through the war with the nazi germans this war is against nature and i think people need to realize that we're part of the natural world we're not separate from it and we shouldn't take nature's bounty for granted”

Protecting biodiversity requires systemic changes in how food is produced and consumed within the for-profit business world rather than relying on small, individual donations to nonprofits.

“And so if if we're really going to protect biodiversity, which, you know, we're in the middle of an extinction crisis, it has to come from how we produce things and how we consume things, like through the business world.”

Public land should not be the primary choice for renewable energy development as other, less ecologically sensitive options exist.

“I think we should avoid that on public lands because there are other uses. That's not to say we shouldn't develop those renewables, but I don't think public land should be the first place.”

Shawn Ryan believes that public lands belong to the American people and should not be sold off to private developers.

“That's land that's ours, the American citizen. That's my land. That's your land. That's land that Theodore Roosevelt set aside for people like us to enjoy and to do as we please on it.”

“we are killing record numbers of deer record numbers of bucks in particular but we need to to shoot more antlerless deer for a lot of reasons uh everything ranging from Habitat to disease management to frankly being a good neighbor and helping feed people out there”

“In our proposal, we set a 15% desired level of extraction for this species to maintain the population at its current level so that it does not grow further.”
