The US should reform its prison system by shifting from lengthy incarceration toward strategies that incentivize personal improvement and prepare individuals for successful societal reentry.

The legal system should be reformed because it currently incorrectly treats individuals as if they are simply the crimes they are accused of committing.

“I think that leads to a lot of injustice. It leads to a lot of misjudgment about who people are. I mean, for me, it's been important to commit to this concept that we're all more than the worst thing we've ever done because I I don't want to be judged by the worst things I've done.”

Prison environments should be humane because the intended punishment is the loss of freedom, not mistreatment.

“I think the president should be humane no one is saying I'm not saying anyway that people who are guilty shouldn't be sent to prison that they shouldn't be punished I think the sentence should fit the crime and the the punishment is supposed to be the loss of your freedom it's not supposed to be tha”

The criminalization of drug addiction and the reliance on for-profit prisons for labor is a failed policy that does not address crime.

“If you have mental illness, much more likely to go to prison. Once you're in prison, if you're mentally ill or you have bad social skills, you're much more likely to get into a scrape with a guard who probably isn't trained to deal with somebody who's mentally ill.”

The state should implement stricter GPS monitoring for violent felons and better manage re-entry to improve public safety.

Lenient criminal justice policies are mislabeled as nonviolent when they actually allow violent offenders to be released early from prison.

The United States should move away from the current criminal justice approach and implement longer prison sentences for violent offenders.

Prop 47, by decriminalizing shoplifting, removed the deterrent for criminal behavior and incentivized theft.

“Prop 47 passed in 2014. So, prior to that, I would like beg for change at the train station and do things like that and little pesky crimes. But after SB I mean after Prop 47 passed, which essentially decriminalized shoplifting. I was making, you know, three to $400 a day shoplifting.”
