The Mica Miller case has a September 2026 contradiction sitting in plain view: JP Miller publicly called Mark Kaufman his best friend, while Kaufman says that relationship has been mischaracterized. The Netflix documentary Death of the Pastor's Wife put old footage, church relationships, and Mica's allegations back under a national spotlight. Kaufman stood as best man when JP and Mica married in 2017. In wedding footage, he joked that JP had forced him to become his friend and his best man. The morning after Mica died on April 27, 2024, JP introduced Kaufman from the Solid Rock pulpit as his best friend before Kaufman sang for the congregation. Kaufman's September 2026 statement draws a much tighter boundary around that relationship. He says JP was never part of the core group of friends he regularly spent time with, denies witnessing mistreatment of Mica, and says he has severed ties with JP and the church. Reporting also says JP's minority stake in Kaufman's Myrtle Beach piano bar was bought out in late 2025. That distancing lands beside another piece of footage Robin Dreeke examines. At Mica's May 5, 2024 memorial, JP said he had spent time beside her body several times and claimed he had tried to raise her from the dead. He has not been charged in Mica's death, which authorities ruled a suicide, and his federal case is set for the October 2026 term.
