Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Tony Brueski to unpack the phrase prosecutors say sits at the center of the federal case against JP Miller: protection. According to the indictment, Miller allegedly told federal agents he had a private investigator monitor Mica Miller to keep her safe. Shavaun calls that dynamic carewashing — control repackaged as concern so the target, the institution and sometimes even law enforcement hear protection where the conduct allegedly looks more like possession. That lens also changes how you look at the collapse of Solid Rock Church. Public reporting has placed the ministry’s real-estate holdings at about $5.59 million in late 2023, including the church campus, additional acreage, vehicles, an airplane and the pastor’s home after it was transferred to the ministry. By late 2024, the church and school were closed, the main property had sold, and the acreage had been moved into a new entity tied to JP. Former church leaders have publicly said they were never shown full financial statements and did not know the extent of what the ministry controlled. Federal prosecutors charged Miller in December 2025 with cyberstalking and making false statements. The indictment alleges a pattern from November 2022 through April 27, 2024, including repeated unwanted contact, financial interference, tire damage, an intimate image posted without consent and tracking devices placed on Mica’s vehicle. He has pleaded not guilty, denies abuse and has not been charged in connection with Mica Miller’s death. Trial is set for the October 2026 federal term. Shavaun Scott keeps the focus where it belongs: on how alleged controllers use the language of care to recruit silence and compliance. When a leader can frame surveillance as love and secrecy as stewardship, a church can become an ecosystem that protects power instead of people. Now the question is bigger than one indictment. It is what happened inside a ministry that once said it was thriving, why so many people appear to have known so little about the money, and how concern for Mica was so often answered with someone else’s version of what was supposedly good for her.
