Nick Reiner will not face the death penalty in the alleged killings of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced September 15 that prosecutors will instead seek a sentence of life without parole if Reiner is convicted as charged. Hochman said he considered aggravating and mitigating factors and the views of Nick's siblings before making the decision. That criminal case is now colliding with a separate fight over money. Reiner is asking a probate judge for access to a trust his parents created for him in 1993. His lawyers say the trust is worth about $1.6 million and required half to be distributed when he turned 30 in September 2023 - more than two years before Rob and Michele were killed. Court filings say roughly $558,000 should already have been paid. Reiner says it never was. The trustee dispute turns on whether that money was already Nick's before the deaths and how California's slayer statute affects the trust while the murder case is unresolved. His lawyers argue the statute should not block a distribution that became mandatory before the alleged crimes. The trust side has raised concerns about releasing money that may become disputed if he is convicted. The criminal case carries a separate mental-health question. Reiner has a documented psychiatric history, but no public filing establishes that he has entered an insanity plea. He has pleaded not guilty. The grand jury indictment includes lying-in-wait and multiple-murder special circumstances. The probate hearing is set for October 23, while the criminal case returns to court October 7.
