Before Josh. Before Joseph. There was the grandfather. And before all of them, there was the man who built the world they lived in — a man who was never ordained, never married, held no theological credentials, and yet filled convention centers with ten thousand people per city and convinced millions of evangelical families to rebuild their entire lives around his teachings. This week's look back at the most compelling stories in true crime traces the Duggar pattern to its roots — and it goes deeper than any single arrest. Bill Gothard founded the Institute in Basic Life Principles and led it for approximately six decades. IBLP's own published doctrine described leaving paternal authority as witchcraft. Their curriculum deliberately excluded sex education. Their materials said fear of dying in pregnancy was satanic and rock music was more addictive than crack cocaine. More than 34 women accused Gothard of serious misconduct and abuse. He has denied every allegation. A civil lawsuit was dismissed. He is 91 years old, still online, and has never faced a criminal charge. Then there's the family that called IBLP home. Amy Duggar King revealed in her 2025 memoir "Holy Disruptor" that Jim Bob's father, Jimmy Lee Duggar, was someone children should never have been alone with. Amy's own mother and grandmother made sure she never was — locked doors, strict rules, no explanation until after Jimmy Lee's death in 2009. According to Amy, Jimmy Lee was also violently abusive, allegedly attacking her mother Deanna severely on multiple occasions. Jim Bob reportedly stepped in during one of those incidents. He knew what his father was capable of. That knowledge produced silence, not action. Amy also describes finding disturbing material on Josh's old laptop and bringing it to Jim Bob. According to Amy, he dismissed it. Federal investigators later came asking about that same computer. A family member called Amy "troublesome" for writing the book. Roughly two months later, Joseph Duggar was arrested for allegedly molesting a 9-year-old. Three generations. Same family. Same silence. One system that taught them all how to keep it that way.
