Aurélien opens by explaining what the @WorldBankGroup does and then walks us through the facts about India. He contrasts India’s path with China’s and explains why the two growth stories have differed. We dig into the big structural questions: the middle-income trap (why many countries stall between middle and high income), India’s demographic “tailwind”, the puzzle of low female labour-force participation despite gains in girls’ education, and how productivity gains will be critical, whether by modernizing agriculture, boosting MSME productivity, or deeper integration into global value chains. A few hard numbers and takeaways from the conversation: • Extreme poverty in India is now under 5%. • India’s GDP per capita today is roughly $2.5-3k; China’s is $12k (about 5×). • India’s growth rate is around 7% while China’s is lower- together India and China contributed roughly half of world growth in 2025 (India 20%, China 30%). • World Bank priorities: poverty reduction, shared prosperity, and a livable planet. • Key constraints: Female labour-force participation, productivity in MSMEs and agriculture, and the challenge of making the leap from middle income to high income. Aurélien’s bottom line: India is already a global story, on a business-as-usual path it will become an upper-middle-income economy and sit among the world’s top three economies by mid-century, but whether India becomes “exceedingly” successful depends on converting demographic and human-capital potential into broad productivity gains. This conversation is a practical, measured playbook on what needs to change for growth to be meaningful for ordinary people. If you liked this episode, share your thoughts in the comments.
