Big Pharma’s trillion-dollar deception on mental health exposed. Psychiatrist Dr. Joanna Moncrieff joins Dr. Mark Hyman to reveal why the chemical imbalance theory of depression causes is a myth. For over three decades, millions of people struggling with depression were told their symptoms were caused by a simple "serotonin deficiency" in the brain—and that a daily antidepressant was the only way to fix it. But what if the entire foundation of modern psychiatry’s most popular narrative is scientifically unsupported? In this eye-opening episode of The Dr. Hyman Show, renowned psychiatrist and researcher Dr. Joanna Moncrieff breaks down her landmark 2022 scientific review. Together, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Moncrieff unpack how pharmaceutical marketing engineered the chemical imbalance myth, why SSRIs often act more like emotional numbing agents than actual cures, and the hidden risks associated with long-term antidepressant use and withdrawal. Moving beyond a broken medical model, this conversation offers a hopeful, empowering path forward. Discover how addressing the true root causes of emotional distress—including ultra-processed foods, chronic stress, systemic trauma, lifestyle, and social isolation—can restore personal agency and transform the future of mental health recovery. Mental health treatment is deeply personal, and this episode explores one perspective on an area of medicine that continues to evolve. If you're currently taking antidepressants or other prescription medications, don't stop or change your treatment based on this discussion alone. Instead, use it as a starting point for an informed conversation with your healthcare provider. Learn More: Dr. Moncrieff recently participated in an FDA Expert Panel on SSRIs and Pregnancy.
