Lindsay Clancy told doctors she was hearing something in her head — and the psychiatrist who cleared her to leave the hospital had never actually seen a case like it. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Tony Brueski to walk through this case: the clinical picture and the paper trail behind it. Clancy faces three counts of first-degree murder after her children died at home in Duxbury in January 2023. She has pleaded not guilty. Her defense doesn't dispute that she caused their deaths — it argues postpartum psychosis compounded by bipolar disorder made her not criminally responsible. Prosecutors argue the killings were intentional and rational. Shavaun breaks down what postpartum psychosis actually looks like clinically — the line between an intrusive thought and a voice giving orders, and why a diagnosis this serious can still let someone present as organized and in control. Research puts the condition at roughly one or two cases per thousand births, and it typically surfaces within days or weeks of delivery. The youngest of Clancy's three children was eight months old, a detail sitting underneath every argument in this trial. Then the episode turns to the doctor who discharged her. On cross-examination, the McLean Hospital psychiatrist who signed off on Clancy's release was asked how many cases like this she had personally seen. Her answer is the moment this episode is built around. Shavaun also gets into the outpatient sessions that followed — how long they actually ran, what got skipped, and why Clancy's own background as a labor and delivery nurse may have worked against her with the people meant to be watching her closest. Clancy attempted suicide the same day her children died and now attends her trial in a wheelchair. What the record shows about her care raises the harder question this episode sits with.
