Sandra Birchmore’s murder trial has a piece of DNA evidence Matthew Farwell’s defense must address: federal prosecutors say his DNA was recovered from a duffel bag strap found around her neck, attached to a closet doorknob. Former prosecutor Eric Faddis joins Tony Brueski to examine what the government says the evidence establishes and what the defense can challenge. Prosecutors point to footage placing a masked Farwell inside Birchmore’s Canton apartment building on February 1, 2021. They also cite the subsequent lack of activity on Sandra’s phone and communications they allege Farwell deleted before state investigators examined his device. In their opening statement, prosecutors described Sandra arranging a baby shower and paying for a nursing-program entrance exam. Farwell’s lawyers maintain that he came to end their relationship and that Sandra took her own life. The fight over physical evidence is unfolding alongside another dispute back in Stoughton. Police Chief Donna McNamara says Town Manager Thomas Calter instructed her to destroy a second internal affairs report connected to Birchmore. Calter denies that allegation. The report was commissioned in 2024, but its findings have not been publicly established. Calter has said the inquiry concerned how the department handled a warning call made by Sandra’s friend in January 2021. Eric Faddis examines how jurors should separate forensic evidence from prosecutors’ interpretation, why the original handling of evidence matters, and whether any allegations involving the second report could have consequences for witnesses or credibility. The central issue remains what the government can prove about Sandra’s death while Farwell contests the charges. What happened inside the apartment must be judged against the evidence, not the suspicions surrounding the department.
