Christa Pike survived Tennessee’s September 30, 2026 execution attempt after receiving two doses of pentobarbital. Months before the attempt, her lawyers had warned a court that a blood condition and difficult veins could make IV access unusually risky. The state disputed their assessment and maintained her veins were accessible. The arguments were more specific than a general objection to lethal injection. Pike’s attorneys asked for a small butterfly needle and trained medical staff. A special master heard testimony before the execution went forward. What happened when the drugs were administered has become the subject of a fresh legal fight. Pike’s attorneys say the IV lines failed and the drug leaked into surrounding tissue, injuring her arms. The Tennessee Department of Correction says its team followed the established protocol and that the procedure authorized nothing further after the second dose. Those two accounts leave a serious question: was the protocol followed successfully, or did the procedure itself fail? On October 7, Judge I’Ashea Myles ordered the state to preserve drugs, needles, tubing, records, and communications tied to the attempt. Governor Bill Lee also paused additional executions pending a review. Newly released 911 recordings show that confusion about the calls delayed emergency personnel from entering the prison. Pike has since returned to prison.
