On May 4, 2017, 35-year-old Heather Turner was found dead on her bathroom floor in Dallas, Georgia, with a single gunshot wound to the head. Days earlier, she had told a coworker she was leaving her husband, Andy Turner, that weekend. Her death was ruled undetermined, and for years, the people who loved her kept asking questions. Then, in 2022, Heather’s case reached a national audience, and a surprise source came forward with something they say they saw just before her funeral… In this episode of Crime Junkie, Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat continue examining the mysterious death of Heather Turner, from the evidence that divided her community to the investigation that officially closed her case. You’ll hear about the steam still coming from the bathroom when deputies arrived, the five-word note found in a spiral-bound notebook, the blood on both of Heather’s hands, the four calls Andy made before he called 911, the moment on the 911 call that some believe is a confession, the funeral home director who says they saw a wound with no stippling or muzzle burn, and what they say they overheard Andy and his father, Curtis Turner, say at the viewing. Then Andy told his side of the story. In 2023, he released his book. In it, he writes that Heather was never leaving her family, but some of his accounts don’t match the investigative records, including when his hands were tested for gunshot residue and whether responding EMTs saw blood on his face. Then the case was closed. On February 20, 2026, the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office announced its review with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation had concluded Heather died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Sheriff Ashley Henson acknowledged investigative mistakes were made, but said the evidence was clear: Heather’s gun, her DNA on the trigger, positive gunshot residue on her hands and a note in her handwriting. The Sheriff’s Office said the U.S. Secret Service analyzed the 911 call and found no evidence of a confession, and that luminol testing showed no sign the bathroom wall had been wiped clean. Then the coroner made one more move. Paulding County Coroner Lindsey Eberhart Fuller, who ordered Heather’s autopsy in 2017, says the press conference left concerning questions unaddressed. She is not disputing the medical examiner’s findings, but she has called a coroner’s inquest so all of the evidence can be laid out in front of a jury. The inquest is set for January 2027. In a statement to 11Alive, Andy said his family is disappointed in the coroner. This episode also includes Ashley’s conversation with Andy’s former fiancée, Christy Chupp, about the cycle of abuse she says she was trapped in, why she kept going back, the woman who helped her finally get out, and how she rebuilt her life.
