What was Socrates actually hearing when his daimon spoke, and why might the space in-between be the key to discerning spirits today? NEW COURSE with Charles Stang: Daemons in Divinity. Learn more and register: https://lectern.johnvervaeke.com/courses/daemons-in-divinity In the second dialogue of this Lectern series on the daimon, Harvard's Charles Stang and John Vervaeke move from Plato to Socrates' other witnesses, Xenophon and Aristophanes. Charles shows how the charges against Socrates set the gods of the city (theoi) against new divinities (daimonia), and how Xenophon defends him by framing the daimonion as ordinary divination. John brings in the cognitive science of felt presence, warns against both demonizing every entity and trusting every one, and argues that discernment of spirits is a learnable skill, more like a martial art than a set of beliefs. They then turn to Aristophanes' The Clouds, where Socrates hangs in a basket mingling his thought with the air. From there: breath, Tai Chi and spiritual alchemy, Diotima's Eros as a daimon, the philosopher as metaxu, and finite transcendence. The episode closes on the meaning crisis as a loss of the middle register, pointing toward William Desmond and the next conversation on Apuleius. Charles Stang is Professor of Early Christian Thought at Harvard Divinity School and Director of the Center for the Study of World Religions. https://www.hds.harvard.edu/people/charles-m-stang John Vervaeke is a cognitive scientist and philosopher whose work explores cognition, meaning, wisdom, and the meaning crisis. https://johnvervaeke.com/ Works discussed: Plato – Apology, Symposium, Timaeus Xenophon – Memorabilia Aristophanes – The Clouds Ben Alderson-Day – Presence John Geiger – The Third Man Factor Barbara Tversky – Mind in Motion William Desmond – Being and the Between "We are not transcendent purely.
