Prison reform is essential because changing a person's environment and providing genuine support and love can effectively turn incarcerated individuals into productive community assets.

John McAvoy advocates for the increased use of sports and exercise programs in prisons as a tool for rehabilitation and reducing violence.

“I do generally believe that sport in prisons could be a far more powerful used tool than it is at the moment.”

Society should offer rehabilitation and a second chance to individuals after they have served their time in prison.

“if you say you believe in the justice system and you believe in the whole american you know structure you also got to believe in rehabilitation that [ __ ] can change and you can't just be holding somebody accountable about oh man you was at the jailer before”

He believes that realizing one's own potential is crucial for young people to avoid making the destructive choices that lead to incarceration.

“Understanding my own potential. Um, I truly believe that when kids in their formative years don't understand their potential, it becomes like a catalyst to a host of bad decisions.”

The corrections system should be treated as a separate, priority-focused entity from the broader criminal justice system to improve outcomes for the 95% of inmates who will eventually be released.

“So, what I think we have to do in America first is we need to separate corrections from the criminal justice system. Make it its own system. Now make it a priority.”

The current justice and prison system in America is a profit-driven industry that relies on exploitation and should be fundamentally changed, including the legalization of drugs.

“so you've got human beings being warehoused for profits in america for the private prisons and the contracts in the tens of billions a year and then the kick down to the politicians and the legislators are in the tens of millions a year in political contributions”

The United States prison system is ineffective and cruel, failing to focus on rehabilitation.

“our prison system's broke oh for sure and let me tell you it's the worst [ __ ] prison system in the free world”

Private prison companies profit inappropriately from taxpayer-funded contracts to operate immigration detention facilities.

“These giant facilities that they are building are overseen by private prison companies. This is our tax dollars. Our tax dollars going into the per diem, the amount they pay per day per day according to how many beds are filled. So, this is actually a huge money maker for people like CoreCivic”

He suggests that incarceration environments often foster criminal development rather than rehabilitation.

“So once you get locked up, >> it is truly a university full of people who are trying to perfect being criminals.”

Government oversight and reform efforts are insufficient because they do not address the fundamental issue of the for-profit prison system.

“as much as I like crapping on the Democrats, and there's plenty of reason to crap on Democrats and Republicans, too. Um, there's not much the Democrats could do when this is a federal uh prison and Geog Group is running it with a $1 billion contract for 15 years.”

Matt Walsh contends that prison is intended to be a painful experience and providing amenities like tablets to prisoners undermines that essential purpose of punishment.

“Prison is not supposed to be fun. I don't know how many times I have to say this. Prison is supposed to be a painful experience. The pain is the point. It is the point. If we got to a point where prison is not painful, then there's then it's pointless.”

The current prison system may actually suffer from under-incarceration because dangerous criminals remain free on the streets.

“You always hear this from the left and the right about oh, we have over incarceration. I think we probably have under incarceration cuz we still have criminals out on the street.”
