Trump's decision to deploy the National Guard without the state governor's consent is an illegal and authoritarian act.

“there is not going to be a Mark Esper in place now to say hey we shouldn't you can't federalize the national guard over the objections of the governor of California that's not something that is legal or permissible and you to turn troops on American citizens. Like that is an extraordinary thing.”

The deployment of thousands of National Guard troops to serve as quick reaction forces for riot control is concerning because there are no clear major issues that local law enforcement cannot manage.

“Well, now they're talking about uh reactionary forces to ensure law and order against rioting of 23,500 people. And that sort of begs the question, why do we need that when we again don't seem to have any major issues that regular law enforcement hasn't been able to handle? And that is I think deepl”

The deployment of the National Guard to crime-ridden cities is a necessary and positive idea to address the issue of uncontrolled crime.

“I think it's a good idea.”

The speaker is skeptical of a sustained military presence in American cities, fearing it establishes a precedent that could be weaponized by future administrations.

“I am uneasy cheering on military presence in in these cities if it's a sustained presence. Uh and because I'm not confident that the right's going to hold power after Trump.”

He believes the National Guard should not be deployed for domestic policing in cities like Los Angeles or Baltimore.

“I don't think I never thought that the National Guard should be in LA. I don't think the National Guard should be in Baltimore.”

He claims that using the National Guard for municipal policing is ineffective, unsustainable, and an improper use of military forces.

“Because it doesn't work. It's not sustain. It's not It's not sustainable. You can't do that. We are spending over well over a million dollars a day to have the National Guard in Washington DC right now. And do you know what assignments they have? They're picking up trash.”

The military should generally not be involved in domestic law enforcement, which should be reserved as a last resort.

“The military should never be involved in local law enforcement. I shouldn't say never. The military being involved in local law enforcement should be an absolute last resort.”
