Shaun Attwood contends that the United States prison system is corrupt and serves as a profit-driven institution that mass-incarcerates nonviolent offenders.

He believes the prison system is designed to break down a person's humanity and ambition.

“I think this system is designed to break down ambition and creativity and too like institutionalize you is the word that is commonly used and I think like that just kind of kills your Humanity and it kills your psyche and it just makes you feel worthless”

The American prison system is a destructive and ineffective institution that currently prioritizes long-term isolation over rehabilitation.

“you go into the criminal justice system and it is designed to obliterate hope and to tell you that you've got nothing coming at all”

The Marion prison model was a heinously secure, 23-hour lockdown facility that functioned as a 'control unit' for the most sophisticated prisoners.

“that was the most secure heinous 23-hour lockdown ever [ __ ] conceived and man and then like 2006 they decommissioned it and then the adx opened but in the 1990s was like 300 85 of the most sophisticated predacious [ __ ] on planet Earth man”

The New York state prison system should repeal the HALT Act because it prevents solitary confinement for dangerous inmates and creates hazardous working conditions for correctional officers.

“and that's why during the strike the correctional workers have said that their top priority their main demand is repealing this awful halt act”

He believes that federal correctional officers are significantly underpaid and undervalued for the dangerous nature of their job.

“a CO in the federal prison system gets paid less than an FBI secretary so that guy walks in work every day and has to listen to crap and then has to go home and listen to his spouse and her crap because they're barely making a check to check and then they wonder why you might have a CO that gets dir”

He describes his prison time as a challenging but ultimately transformative experience that forced him to confront his life choices.

“So, when you are stripped of everything you've ever had in your life and all you have is yourself you learn more about you and who you are, the self-reflection, the accountability. That was the best lesson for me.”

He claims that spending time in prison can be a powerful motivator for personal change and future success.

“I recommend a little prison bit for everybody because when you lose time like when you see the days of your life just getting flushed down the toilet you're nothing is a better motivator”
