A sustainable approach for independent filmmakers involves being prolific and prioritizing the creative process and relationships over chasing only big-budget, high-stakes projects.

“If I can make some B+es that some people like and some people don't and make more of them and enjoy the creative process and the being with them, that's where my focus started to go.”

Self-financing creative projects allows for more artistic control and avoids the waste seen in traditional studio processes.

“it always seemed like the smart thing to do to me because and the it felt good i liked the way it felt more than anything else because you see so much waste in the way things are done”

He believes that filmmakers must remain dedicated to their unique vision and reject studio notes that compromise the integrity of their creative work.

“it was supposed to be with a big Studio but then they were giving notes about changing the creative and we're like it just won't be ours if we like like Bend to this so we we took it we did it independently in Australia”

The current industry climate makes it significantly harder for young filmmakers to get their work seen due to oversaturation and competition.

“I feel if I had to navigate the current climate trying to start off as a first first-time filmmaker and have my film get seen really tough because you're there's so much more competition”

He values the democratization of filmmaking that allows new talent to create and distribute content without needing to rely on traditional studios.

“I love the aspect that, you know, people can, you know, they can work on their craft. >> And you don't need a studio, you know, these young streamers and people with all this technology, they don't need a studio.”

Creators should bypass meetings and prioritize the actual production of their work.

“and we even had a philosophy around it which was just for me and him but it started coming out and now it's like a I guess it's like an independent film mantra which is make movies not meetings.”

Filmmakers should actively produce their own work instead of waiting for a film festival to provide opportunities.

“and like the one thing that drives me nuts as a filmmaker is like, don't wait for our film festival to make a movie. Go do your own film.”

Placing creative constraints on filmmakers forces them to make quick decisions and improves their creative output.

“the thing about the 72-hour that's beautiful is there is no procrastination. So, you can sit here, oh man, I have this idea for this movie. I have this idea for this for years. But now the time's on. You got 72 hours. So, now it's like you have to go.”
