Bryan Kohberger's family just went public with a coordinated statement through two retained attorneys, telling ABC News that his confession to four murders was coerced and his guilty plea should be thrown out.Parents Michael and Mary Ann Kohberger, along with sisters Amanda and Mel, said they want "the complete and unvarnished truth" told through "a proper trial, as opposed to an improper plea." The statement was distributed through a Pennsylvania law firm and a New York civil attorney — a legal team separate from the public defender now handling Kohberger's post-conviction case.Kohberger's own handwritten petition from prison alleges his defense attorneys Anne Taylor, Elisa Massoth, and Bicka Barlow coerced him into falsely confessing and withheld hair evidence he says proves his innocence. He also claims one attorney fabricated a story about death-row conditions to frighten him into the deal. He wrote that his family was present during "most" of those attorney-client meetings. The people now calling the confession forced were in the room when it happened.The hair evidence he calls his proof of innocence was already examined by his own defense expert, Ruth Ballard. She determined it was consistent with the victim's own hair. That analysis was filed with the court by his lead attorney a month before he signed the plea deal. The language Kohberger uses — "clumps of hair" — appears in no court or police record. It comes from a bestselling book about the case.At his plea hearing, Kohberger told the judge under oath he was not coerced, was not promised anything, and was guilty. He confirmed it for each victim by name. Prosecutors are calling his post-conviction effort a "fishing expedition." His family's grief is real.
