Bryan Kohberger confessed to four murders, gave up his right to appeal, and is now heading back to court anyway. Judge Steven Hippler — the same judge who accepted that guilty plea in July 2025 — has scheduled a status conference for June 3, 2027, and an evidentiary hearing for June 17. Prosecutors asked him to dismiss the case without a hearing. He refused. The reason is a handwritten petition Kohberger filed from jail in July 2026, claiming his own defense attorneys coerced him into confessing — that they promised prison conditions that never materialized and buried evidence he considers exculpatory, including hair found in Ethan Chapin's hand that was never DNA tested. Here's the twist nobody saw coming: the digital forensics expert Kohberger's own defense team hired, Sy Ray, went to reporters and said investigators missed additional cellphone geolocation data placing Kohberger near the house before the murders — and that he's confident Kohberger would be convicted again. Ray is publicly calling for the death penalty to come back on the table. Meanwhile, Kohberger has two new attorneys who inherited this mess. Greg Rauch was appointed in August 2026 and hadn't read the case file or spoken to his client yet. Jason Goldman told PEOPLE magazine the public shouldn't assume it understands this case — while being paid with taxpayer money in a case that's already cost Idaho more than eight million dollars.
