Kevin Reddington's post-mistrial Rule 25 argument put the Lindsay Clancy case into a completely different public conversation. After a six-week trial centered on postpartum psychosis and criminal responsibility, Clancy's attorney argued that the Commonwealth had not presented legally sufficient evidence to prove she killed her three children. The argument sounded like a total reversal, especially after the defense had previously offered to stipulate to the underlying acts while contesting criminal responsibility. But Rule 25 is narrower than the internet reaction made it sound. Under Massachusetts law, the motion asks whether the prosecution's evidence, viewed under the required legal standard, was sufficient to sustain a conviction. Reddington attacked the Commonwealth's proof of the acts themselves and its proof that Clancy could appreciate the wrongfulness of her conduct. Prosecutors responded that the trial record contained both physical and circumstantial evidence and called the defense position unsupported. Judge William Sullivan denied the renewed Rule 25 motion on October 1, ruling that the evidence was sufficient for a rational jury to decide the case. That ruling leaves the mistrial in place and keeps a potential retrial alive. The defense is still pursuing separate arguments involving the lone holdout juror and double jeopardy. The bigger question is what this legal strategy actually means. It does not establish an alternate suspect, and it does not make Patrick Clancy part of the prosecution's case. It shows how aggressively the defense is trying to shut down a second trial after an 11-1 deadlock.
