Recent studies have shown that even if you do eat high-protein diet while you’re in ketosis, you can maintain high levels of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), the main ketone body. This research suggests (and self-experimentation confirms) that gluconeogenesis happens--both ketones and glucogenic amino acids make glucose--but that doesn't mean you're going to get fat as a result or that it'll affect your blood sugar. (In my opinion, the ability to utilize different substrates is a sign of metabolic flexibility, which is overall a good thing.) Lastly, elevated levels of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) while eating a low-carb, high-fat, high-protein diet maybe linked with the increased satiety, decreased appetite and decreased blood glucose levels. So while gluconeogenesis exists, it may in fact have a thermogenic effect, and is not necessarily a bad thing!
