Bryan Kohberger was set to challenge Judge Steven Hippler's impartiality on October 15, 2026. Instead, an October 14 court order canceled that appearance and removed the June 2027 hearings from the calendar. Those cancellations do not mean Kohberger has won his attempt to withdraw the guilty plea he entered in the Idaho student murders. Kohberger pleaded guilty in July 2025 to killing Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. Hippler sentenced him to four consecutive life terms. During the plea hearing, Kohberger answered yes when the judge asked whether he was pleading guilty because he was guilty. In his later post-conviction petition, Kohberger alleged his former defense lawyers gave him ineffective assistance and that his plea was not voluntary. His new attorney, Greg Rauch, argues Hippler should not decide the petition. Rauch points to the judge's harsh sentencing remarks and to his earlier refusal to delay proceedings. The defense also wants the matter returned to Latah County. Prosecutors oppose Kohberger's challenge and have asked the court to dismiss his petition without an evidentiary hearing. Under the revised schedule, Kohberger can amend his petition by January 13, 2027. Evidence gathering must finish by July 7. The parties may ask to schedule a later status conference and possible evidentiary hearing after other legal disputes are addressed. None of that automatically grants a new trial or disqualifies the judge.
