Two courtrooms. Two sets of evidence left sitting. Alex Murdaugh's defense revealed unknown male DNA under both of Maggie Murdaugh's fingernails and on the phone thrown from the car — none of it tested by SLED. A drug dealer's statement about $15,000-a-week pill sales sat buried for three years. Murdaugh's attorney told a judge his client passed a polygraph. He failed it, and was never tested about the killings. The judge warned him: candor is not optional. In federal court, Matthew Farwell's texts to Sandra Birchmore were read aloud — he told her he figured she would have said no because she was young. He told her to delete messages. Eight days after she died, he searched his work phone for consent revocation. Both Murdaugh and Farwell have pleaded not guilty.
