Two cases that just shifted. In the Nancy Guthrie kidnapping, a second note from the alleged kidnappers claims she died shortly after being taken. Investigators reportedly believe it’s legitimate. A defense attorney says that note may be a confession. Meanwhile an anonymous emailer keeps demanding Bitcoin for what he claims is video evidence — and the FBI has been arresting people for sending fakes. In the Alex Murdaugh retrial, the first hearing set the trial for April 5, 2027. The defense showed up with eight new experts, first-responder transcripts suggesting other people were at Moselle, and a DNA motion using the same lab as the Kohberger case. The prosecution lost 12.5 hours of financial crimes testimony the Supreme Court called excessive. And the motive theory faces a jury that already knows Murdaugh pleaded guilty to the fraud and is serving forty years. Criminal defense attorney Bob Motta evaluates both cases.
