Nolan Wells died on Horn Island, Mississippi on July 4, and seven weeks later, nobody in law enforcement has forensically examined the one device that could explain what happened to him. His mother already knows what's on it. She and her sister went through Nolan's phone before any exam protocol existed and opened both of his Snapchat accounts. They were completely empty. That detail sits at the center of a fight that's now pulled in the district attorney, a digital forensics lab, and a family running out of patience. On July 15, lawyers for the family and District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath agreed to a joint forensic exam at the Digital Forensics Lab at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, both sides' experts, possibly the FBI. No date was ever set. Nearly a month later, the DA's office sent a letter demanding the family hand over the phone within 48 hours. Nolan's parents weren't even in Mississippi when it arrived. Five days after that, the family offered four separate dates on twelve hours' notice. Still no exam. Meanwhile, the three friends who were with Nolan on the island handed their own phones straight to the FBI, no subpoena required. Forensic experts say tools like Cellebrite can pull deleted data off a device like Nolan's, but platforms like Snapchat purge messages from their own servers over time. Every week that phone sits in an evidence bag instead of a lab, the odds of recovering what was really on it keep shrinking. Nobody has been charged. The friends deny touching the phone. The sheriff's office ruled out foul play within two days of Nolan's death, before the autopsy was even finished, before the phone was ever opened by anyone official. Tony Brueski lays out exactly how a piece of evidence this important ended up going nowhere, and who's really responsible for the delay.
