Respect for nature and sustainable interaction with the landscape is a prerequisite for a character to be considered positive in Jim Harrison's work.

“I don't think he ever had like a main character that didn't respect nature. It was like a prerequisite >> to be a character of his. Like you had to respect nature or else you're not allowed in.”

He considers the activity of camping to be miserable, particularly when it lacks basic comforts like electricity.

“It was the worst horrible 48 hours of my like it was terrible. We took a a Honda uh Civic into the woods. It we were like riding through Fallujah. Like it was like bouncing around and it was terrible.”

He finds the prospect of swimming to the bottom of a lake to retrieve fishing equipment to be repulsive.

“I would rather be in the ocean with the tiger sharks and all that stuff than touch the bottom of a lake or a pond.”

He believes the experience of being in the woods and hunting is an exhilarating and rewarding activity.

“I was so excited. I'm telling you, it is the most exhilarating. Like it's still to this day like going out and hearing like if I hear like a turkey gobble when I'm turkey hunting I'm like I'm I'm like ready to jump through my skin.”

He advocates for the practice of releasing largemouth and smallmouth bass rather than eating them, viewing them primarily as sport fish.

“The second we got a little more into fishing, we realized, oh, you don't really eat these. These are these are for the sport. So, it's very much frowned upon in my life, in my world to really eat.”

It is acceptable for states to provide preferential access to hunting and fishing resources to their own residents.

“the fact is like no state is under the obligation to provide equal access and opportunity to that state's game resources to non-residents.”

Using disposable gloves while fishing in cold weather provides warmth and maintains the dexterity needed for tasks like tying knots.

“It's just enough to take the edge off if it's a little windy outside or whatnot. It's just enough to take the edge off and keep your your fingers warm.”
